Public Art Installation at Puente Romano Hotel, Marbella, Spain

Following its acclaimed presentation at CAN Art Fair 2024 in Ibiza, the monumental bronze sculpture Nalakala by Indonesian contemporary artist Roby Dwi Antono has been installed at the Puente Romano Hotel in Marbella, Spain, where it will remain on public view for at least one year. The project marks another milestone in Volery Gallery’s public art program, dedicated to bringing museum-quality works into open, accessible environments around the world.

Standing 2.75 meters tall and weighing over 1.2 tons, Nalakala is a defining work within Antono’s sculptural practice, merging classical figuration with surreal, psychological, and cosmic imagery. It exemplifies the artist’s ability to blend mythological narrative with emotional depth, establishing him as one of the leading figures in the new contemporary art movement.

A New Chapter in Public Art in Marbella

Installed amidst the Mediterranean gardens of Puente Romano, Nalakala blurs the boundary between public art and contemporary mythology. Though conceived in the studio, its monumental presence in an outdoor setting transforms it into a living dialogue between fine art, nature, and the public.

The sculpture redefines what public art in Marbella can represent today—an act of poetic imagination that invites reflection and connection beyond gallery walls. Its setting encourages viewers to experience contemporary art as part of their daily landscape, bridging culture and environment.

“Our goal is to create enduring, accessible encounters with contemporary art,” explains Rom Levy, founder of Volery Gallery Dubai and StreetArtNews. “Public art has evolved beyond murals and interventions. It now encompasses how artists engage with architecture, landscape, and emotion. Nalakala embodies that evolution.”

Bridging Contemporary Art and the Street

For Roby Dwi Antono, whose visual language often explores the fragile balance between innocence and chaos, Nalakala represents a pivotal shift from painting to immersive, site-specific storytelling.

From the streets of Yogyakarta to major international art collections, Antono’s trajectory mirrors the rise of artists who transcend illustration, pop surrealism, and street culture to define a global contemporary art movement rooted in emotional authenticity and visual mastery.
