NORITOSHI MITSUUCHI

born 1978, Osaka, Japan

Noritoshi Mitsuuchi (b. 1978, Osaka, Japan) is a contemporary Japanese painter whose work unfolds at the delicate threshold between memory, imagination, and emotional instinct. A graduate of Kobe Design University, Mitsuuchi has been active since 2002, developing a distinct visual language that has been presented across Japan and internationally.

Rooted in an intuitive and deeply personal approach to painting, Mitsuuchi’s practice resists fixed narratives and defined identities. His figures, at once childlike and ageless, inhabit ambiguous spaces where time softens and meaning remains open. Through fluid forms and organic motifs reminiscent of plant life, his compositions evoke a quiet sense of transformation, as if new beings are constantly emerging from within existing ones.

His painterly language is marked by bold, instinctive brushstrokes and a vibrant yet sensitive use of color. Rather than pursuing technical perfection, Mitsuuchi embraces a deliberate unlearning, returning to a state of perception closer to that of childhood, where emotion precedes logic. In this space, innocence and unease, tenderness and tension coexist without resolution.

Echoing a lineage of artists who sought to reclaim the purity of gesture, Mitsuuchi reflects, “The more you try to perfect your art, the more the essential things begin to disappear.” This philosophy resonates throughout his work, positioning painting not as illustration, but as a refuge, an open field where unnamed feelings and fragile states of being can quietly endure.

Presented by Volery Gallery, Mitsuuchi’s work engages with a wider contemporary dialogue around identity, vulnerability, and the search for belonging in an increasingly complex world.
