Zhitong’s new paintings pulse with a vivid, poetic energy, shaped by her investigation of gestural brushwork and her fascination with logic, mathematics, and the natural sciences. Treating each canvas as a visual puzzle, she employs a reasoning akin to reductio ad absurdum—following impossible premises to arrive at unexpected structures, opulent colours, and dreamlike atmospheres.
Her training in traditional, folk, and contemporary Chinese dance informs the rhythmic movement that courses through these works. Gesture becomes a form of communication, allowing emotional perception and bodily expression to guide the composition. Ultramarine and magenta anchor the series, creating a nuanced play of light and shadow, and a balance between vivid intensity and soft transitions. Abstract and figurative forms intertwine, capturing the meeting point of motion and stillness, rationality and sensibility.
Zhitong’s recent exhibitions include the Hong Kong Arts Centre (2024), a duo show at Palm Gallery in Taiwan (2024), and a solo exhibition at Cadet Capela in France (2023). For the artist, painting is an open-ended pursuit—each stroke placed with decisive intention, each work crystallising the moment when colour, form, and harmony align.
