Volery Gallery is proud to present Floating, a solo exhibition by Aaron Johnson.
Aaron Johnson’s paintings exist in a state of suspension, between figuration and abstraction, weight and weightlessness, the earthly and the cosmic. Built through fluid movement and luminous color, his works unfold as encounters with beings that seem to emerge from light itself.
Johnson’s practice is rooted in the legacy of Color Field painting. Working on the floor, he stains raw canvas with flowing washes of pigment, allowing gravity, chance, and intuition to guide the composition. Paint moves freely across the surface, discovering form rather than imposing it. This openness to unpredictability mirrors the forces Johnson seeks to engage, natural rhythms, cosmic energies, and the interconnectedness of all living things.
Across this body of work, hazy fields of color are punctuated by radiant orbs that act as focal points within otherwise organic compositions. These glowing forms suggest suns, portals, chakras, or cosmic events, points of energy that anchor the paintings while remaining open to interpretation. Figures arise from the flow of paint itself, drifting into visibility before dissolving again into atmosphere.
Johnson understands these figures as nature spirits, ethereal beings alive within rivers, trees, mountains, planets, and stars. Drawing from animistic traditions, the paintings propose a world in which consciousness is not limited to the human, but shared across all forms of existence. The works invite a renewed sense of reverence for the natural world and a deeper awareness of our place within it.
The exhibition title, Floating, speaks to this state of suspension. Bodies hover between abstraction and form, between earth and sky, held in a moment of levitation. This sensation mirrors Johnson’s process, where composition arises through movement and intuition rather than fixed structure. Presented at Volery Gallery, described as the highest art gallery in the world, Floating resonates with its setting as an encounter with light, space, and elevation, where gravity loosens and perception shifts upward toward the cosmos.
